See what you share

[via Cool Tricks newsletter] The best things in life are free, or so it is said. But when it comes to P2P file sharing, what was once thought to have been free may have come with a price.

See What You Share On P2P is a site devoted to showcasing all sorts of files that were 'found' on P2P networks. Most files featured are fairly embarrassing, and were obviously not meant to be shared. Be it a bank statement, a letter of apology to a loved one, or a $280,000 promissory note, these files make great reading for the nosey, while providing a cold reminder of the risks involved in some P2P networks. http://www.seewhatyoushare.com/

XP2 warnings

[via NewsScan] Fourteen percent of tech pros who installed Windows XP service pack 2 have had major problems thereafter, a poll at the SANS Institute website says. Half of this number had no option but to reinstall the system in its entirety.
CRN Test Lab guys downloaded RC2 and pretty much trashed (BSOD) three out of five test systems. I strongly suggest you tread lightly and TEST, TEST, TEST. Here are the ugly details with some suggestion on how to recover.

IE Powerpoint Viewing

OK, here is the scenario. You look around on the intranet or internet and find a powerpoint preso. You click on it and open it in IE. You get a slide show view. Each click goes to the next slide. But what happens when you get to a slide that you want? Or how about when you want to quickly go through the slides without waiting for the builds. Maybe its because I can be a bit of a dope, but I thought I would have to go back to the page that had the link to the deck, save the preso locally, then open it in Powerpoint. But NO!!! Instead, when in that slide show view in IE, just choose the Edit option from the Edit menu. Voila! You get an interface very similar to the full Powerpoint. You can scan through the slides, choose one and copy it, edit the deck and more.

Free CSS tutor

Cascading style sheets represent an exciting opportunity for web designers and developers. They enable much more sophisticated page design (typography and layout) than HTML alone, and they help us manage the complex tasks of developing and maintaining sites, and keeping them up to date. They also greatly simplify the process of making web pages accessible to as many readers as possible, regardless of the hardware and software they use to read our pages, and regardless of any disability they might have.

This free course provides a foundation for working with style sheets for web page presentation. By the end, you'll be able to do just about anything that can be done with the old style of presentational HTML using style sheets instead, and a whole lot more besides.

Spyware Tool Kit

[via SANS Institute]

Yesterday's diary entry solicited a number of replies regarding the "tool kits" people use for fighting spyware, malware and viruses. I've collated the most popular, from both e-mail submissions and some from the Handlers themselves. This list is not necessarily complete in anyway...just a starter for people to help built their own kit.

XP SP2 forum

Windows XP SP2 Experience Forum
Windows XP Service Pack 2 was officially released to the world yesterday (as noted in yesterday's Handlers Diary and numerous other trade magazines and websites). While most users should not have significant problems with SP2, others stumble upon cases where home grown web applications or other 3rd party software may not work properly after installation. The Internet Storm Center has set up a forum to collect the experiences of others in the security community. It is the hope of the ISC that users will be able to share information on problems they have encountered and/or steps they used to help remedy these issues. If you would like to submit your experiences, please see the following URL: http://isc.sans.org/xpsp2.php

well, I recommend that you stay away from SP2.

I woke up this morning feeling fine. I went to my Dell Inspiron
laptop with my cup of coffee, and downloaded SP2 from the Microsoft
website. While SP2 was downloading, my cat jumped up on the table and
spilled my coffee all over my laptop, which shut off at that point.
When I rebooted, I got some rollback message and clicked
"next." The the phone rings, and it's my boss yelling about
why am I late, how it's the last time, and he wants to see me in his
office when I get to work. Well, he didn't even want to hear about my
cat or the spilled coffee. I hung up the phone and started
reinstalling SP2. My wife came into the room I'm using as an office
and told me that she's having an affair ...with my boss. SP2 was
about 60% of the way installed at that point. When it was almost done
and said "cleaning up", the phone rang and it was my boss
telling me not to bother to come in to work...ever again. He also
said that he was taking my wife to Rio for the weekend. My laptop
rebooted, and I was able to log in an all that, but I had lost my
wife and my job before SP2 was even done installing all the way. So I
have to say, stay away from SP2!

Networking tutor

[via lockergnome] "There are three sites that I have used over the years as my favorite networking resources: Practically Networked, World of Windows Networking, and HomeNetHelp. These sites house an insane amount of knowledge about networking and can walk you through the setup of your network no matter what operating system(s) you are using. They can even help you to see the big picture if you aren't sure how to start."

Security conundrum

"Don't connect that new PC to the Internet before taking security
precautions, researchers at the Internet Storm Center warned Tuesday.
According to the researchers, an unpatched Windows PC connected to the
Internet will last for only about 20 minutes before it's compromised by
malware, on average. That figure is down from around 40 minutes, the
group's estimate in 2003... The drop from 40 minutes to 20 minutes is
worrisome because it means the average "survival time" is not long enough
for a user to download the very patches that would protect a PC from
Internet threats." Read more at ZDNet News .

Phones filthy

Office phones filthier than toilet seat

Filthy phones and germ-infested keyboards mean that anyone eating their lunch while at their desk could be biting off more than they can chew. In fact, a recent report by the University of Arizona found that the typical office desk harbours around 400-times more disease-causing bacteria than a toilet seat.

The muckiest spots were shown to be the telephone and desktop, followed by the keyboard and computer mouse. But the highest levels of bacteria were found on the fax machines - three times more than on a toilet door. The Register.com Post

US blamed for 85 per cent of spam

Analysis of spam sent to companies worldwide by messaging security company CipherTrust found that the overwhelming majority of spammers are using computers based in the US to send junk email.

Since May 2004 nearly 86 per cent of spam originated in the US. But only 28 per cent of the total number of computers that sent unsolicited commercial mail during this time were located in the US, indicating that it is only a small number of US computers sending a large amount of spam.

Astalavista

The majority of people still think Astalavista.com is a Crack web site, which is NOT true at all. Astalavista.com is about spreading security knowledge, about providing professionals with what they're looking for, about educating the average Internet user on various security issues; basically we try to create a very well segmented portal where everyone will be able to find his/her place. We realize the fact that we're visited by novice, advanced and highly advanced users, even government bodies; that's why we try to satisfy everyone with the files and resources we have and help everyone find precious information at astalavista.com. Although we sometimes list public files, the exposure they get through our site is always impressing for the author, while on the other hand, some of the files that are listed at Astalavista.com sometimes appear for the first time at our site. We try not to emphasize on the number of files, but on their quality and uniqueness. Everyone knows Astalavista, and sooner or later everyone visits the site.

The new user interface is easy to use and assists you in the necessary steps to send serial mails. Works with Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP. Costs $35. Is there a freeware program? See for yourself!

Optimize pagefile

How can I optimize the Windows 2000/XP/2003 virtual memory (Pagefile)?

Memory tweaking is an important part of the System Administrator's responsibilities. Having too much memory won't hurt you, but this is something we cannot expect to have all the time. This page will give you some working tips on memory management for Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.

CSV file listing

FileList V1.3

FileList is a command line utility that produces a list of files of the given path in the CSV format, which can be imported in a spreadsheet or database. HTML Helper

So you want to create a web page but don't have any idea how to do it? Well, that's what this article is all about. We'll start from the basics and work up to some of the more advanced techniques. The first thing you will need is an editor of some kind. For the first brush at using HTML, learning the commands is important. My suggestion is to use the simplest, easiest editor of all - Notepad. Why use Notepad and not some fancy editor? Simple - you want to learn HTML, not an editor.

What some expensive editors tend to do is hide HTML from you so you don't have to deal with it. Some of them, like Dreamweaver and Frontpage 2000, do a very good job and make it almost totally unnecessary to use HTML at all. Others, like the freeware Arachnophilia, completely expose HTML for viewing and editing.

Oh yes, before I forget, don't use a word processor like Microsoft Word or Wordperfect. These programs, although excellent at what they do, completely change the formatting of lines and make it much more difficult to write HTML code.

Okay now to begin the first lesson.

Fill scanned forms

FORM PILOT is a form filler software. You can fill out paper forms on your computer instead of using a typewriter and use it for preprinted or blank paper forms. It's a fairly simple process of scanning a form, opening the image of the form in Form Pilot, and filling in the form onscreen.

Sophisticated Rename

Sophisticated Rename

Sophisticated Rename is an uncommon program for batch processing. Its power is not limited to renaming functions only. The main features of SR are as follows:

It changes the names and extensions of files using flexible algorithms with the help of various data types:

  • Constants add any text to the template.
  • Counters (numerical and alphabetical) allow to numerate files.
  • Variables represent any limited part of an original file name.
  • Extra variables refer to the metadata of files - EXIF (jpeg, tiff), ID3 (mp3), etc.
  • External variables call your own program to make additional processing.
  • Conditionals allow to deal with the most complicated cases.

In contrast to programming languages, all data types are defined visually and added to the template with just one click.

All your preferences can be saved to a preset to be used later with other files.

SR can also change attributes, dates and times of files (it can be done in compliance with EXIF as well); you can choose one of five available case types for any item in the template or for the whole name.

Internal EXIF and ID3v1/v2 editors are included. You can edit the data for all files at once of for each file separately.

Only this program allows you to fulfill all your ideas connected with batch processing. If you happen to find that SR is short of some features, you can write a plugin for it in any programming language. It will take just a couple of minutes, and it will be certainly faster than to rename a thousand files manually!

And last but not least is the reliability of the program. First of all, it shows the results preview every time you change parameters - you don't have to rename files to see how your template works. Second, it allows to restore old file names even after the renaming process.

Track spammers

Knowing where a suspect intruder is located, or where a malicious email originated, is key information to identify security threats to your system and confidential information. These programs cost over $60 to set up but trials are free.

VisualRoute provides city and country location of IP addresses to help you identify hackers before your system is compromised, along with worldwide domain and network contact information for abuse reporting. VisualRoute will help you to determine if a connectivity problem is due to your ISP, the Internet, or the host you are trying to reach
  • See actual IP locations
    - identifies the physical city/country location of IP addresses
  • Worldwide WHOIS reporting
    - get instant registration from worldwide databases
  • eMailTracker
    - traces an email address to its email server
Works with emailTrackerPro:
  • Determines the IP address of the system an email originated from
  • Determines the country/region of the email source, showing the location on a World map
  • Plug-in integration with MS Outlook (full version) provides one-click email tracking
  • Identifies use of the common 'misdirection' tactic to disguise the sender
eMailTrackerPro analyzes the header of an email you have received, providing the IP address of the machine that sent you the message, which can then be used to track down the sender.

Caller IP™
Similar to Caller ID on your telephone, CallerIP identifies who is connecting to your computer. This is good to know, because your system is vulnerable to outside intruders, even with a firewall in place. Connections are shown in real time and on a global map with actual city and country locations and registration information for the IP address is shown with company name, address, and contact information. Active port scans monitor your system for backdoors and active HTTP/FTP/SNMP services that could allow harmful Trojans or unauthorized access. Try Caller IP for free here and if you think it's worth $29.95 you'll surely go for a real bargain: For a limited time, you can get it for just $19.95 here at the NNT Store.

Legitimate XP?

You say you're not sure whether that computer your neighbor sold you has a legitimate copy of Windows XP properly activated. Mirror backup

These are two programs I've found, about the same price each, that quickly duplicate folders and files in the background so that there are copies of a folder at all times. This is a 'poor man's' way of backing things up but it is 'lighter on resources' than the big backup programs. It does not create a disk image nor a system restore, merely assures that critical data and folders are backed up all the time. Yer friends might like to know that something this simple is available.

Second Copy http://www.centered.com/products.html Once configured, Second Copy monitors the "source" folders for changes or updates and copies new or changed files to the "destination". This process is done unobtrusively in the background. What you want to be copied, to where, and when. 25% discount here: about $22 Here is a review of Second Copy.

Techsoft Pvt. Ltd. MirrorFolder is a real-time mirroring and synchronization software to backup files on local/network/removable drive/disk from local hard disk. I've been using this about a year. I synchronize my quicken files, favorites, roboform data as well as my document files and other regularly updated goodies across two drives. It's not perfect, such as an entire image restore, but it's pretty darn good.

SmartBackup V2.0.3

SmartBackup is an inexpensive, $17, fast and easy to use backup software for Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP. Select important files for backup and it automatically keeps your backups up to date copying only files which have changed since the last backup. The directory structure is preserved.

Additionally it allows you to synchronize your backup source and destination, which makes it easy to keep your data files and documents on your PC and your laptop synchronized. SmartBackup offers detailed options to specify which files should be copied. You can also specify an FTP Server or an ZIP File as backup destination. You can mark any file for backup from the Explorer context menu so that you select files while you are opening, saving or copying them, without starting SmartBackup. SmartBackup is able to refresh a backup automatically once a day or once a week, either at a given time or on Windows startup.

Poster printing

[via lockergnome] Certain pictures are meant to be printed at sizes bigger than 4x6 or 8x10. Consumer printing hardware doesn’t offer such luxury and few of us can afford the commercial alternatives. To get around this printing oversight, Digital Camera Poster Creator smartly adapts the printing capabilities of affordable hardware, carefully calibrating the paper edge to create perfect tiles based on the size of photo paper you select. Like a puzzle, the tiled images are reassembled at the end of the process to create a masterpiece bigger than the sum of the parts. If a 4x6 photo is worth a thousand words, imagine its value if that dimension was 4ft-by-6ft. [Win9x/2k/XP] [$29.00] [DOWNLOAD]

Password update

Most Internet users choose easy-to-guess passwords such as their pet's name, according to a survey by Visa Europe. More than three-fourths of those polled said they choose passwords relating to friends, family and memorable dates.

The favorites are nicknames (21%), birthdays and anniversaries (15%), pet names (15%), family members' names (14%) and memorable dates such as the Battle of Hastings and England's World Cup victory (7%). Two percent even reported using "password" as their password. "It is not surprising that loved ones and pet names top the most popular list as often people struggle to remember random characters or designated log-in codes and opt to choose their own. Of course, it is important that our passwords are personal and meaningful to us, but also that they are difficult to decipher and not easily guessed," says Visa Europe VP Hugo Bottelier.

When choosing a password, Visa suggests avoiding words that appear in the dictionary, as well as words relating to personal information that could be inferred or guessed. The most preferable type of password would have random letters, numbers and punctuation. And for heaven's sake, don't write it down and leave it by your credit card or PC! Data Execution Prevention

XP SP2 alert: Cancel all non-AMD system buys
Leading up to the release of Windows XP Service Pack 2, Microsoft has cited an SP2 feature called Data Execution Prevention (DEP) as a key sentry in the fight against viruses and worms responsible for "buffer overruns." Unfortunately, users of AMD-based systems are virtually the only ones who can take advantage of this important technology. Intel-based notebook and desktop systems that support DEP will not start shipping until the end of 2004. My advice: Postpone your planned systems purchases--or go with AMD.

XP2 pre-Installation Tips

Before you install the Windows XP2 upgrade,
please follow these steps:

1. Back up your personal data.

2. Check with your system manufacturer. Specific models of PCs may be more prone to issues with SP2 than others. If possible, check with your system manufacturer to see if that's known to be the case before you install SP2.

Or check the Scot's Newsletter Forums' Windows forum for the latest word on issues and known problems.

3. Either disable or uninstall software firewall and antivirus software. I can't tell you how many times people have come to me with Windows upgrade problems who have not followed this step. If you neglect to do this, it doesn't mean an automatic melt down of your PC, but the incidence of woes is very high if you don't -- higher than many experienced PC users realize.

4. Check your hard drives for disk errors. In XP, that means running chkdsk /f from a command line. You'll need to reboot your machine to carry out the full process.

5. Make a named System Restore point beforehand. Here are some basic instructions on how to work with System Restore.

6. Shut down all unnecessary applications. This comes under the heading "don't tempt fate."

Rename digital pics

SetNameToTime is a program designed to rename digital camera jpg and tiff files. A file renaming program you may think, that is hardly a new concept - so why use this one?

Almost all jpg and tiff files produced by modern digital cameras contain information like the date and time the picture was shot, if a flash was used, the shutter speed, the f-stop and a lot of other information. SetNameToTime can extract this information and use it to rename the file.

McLuhan Redux

[via Future Brief] "When I taught at a university, I worked with the wireless laptop programs that are replacing computer labs on campuses. Once students began carrying laptops everywhere and using them in class, an interesting dependency developed. There were times in class when I asked a question and students would glance helplessly at the machines, as if to say, 'The answer isn't in my carbon-based brain, but I know I got it right here, on silicon.' Amazingly, the late media theorist Marshall McLuhan saw this coming in the 1960s. Many things he predicted about television did not appear until the appearance of the Internet and portable computers: so-called 'ubiquitous computing.' McLuhan believed our senses become extended outside of our bodies." This fascinating essay examines the ways in which computers are becoming extensions of our physical selves. Read more in CNN.com.

IECookiesView is a small utility that displays the details of all cookies that Internet Explorer stores on your computer.

IEHistoryView Each time that you type a URL in the address bar or click on a link in Internet Explorer browser, the URL address is automatically added to the history index file. When you type a sequence of characters in the address bar, Internet Explorer automatically suggests you all URLs that begins with characters sequence that you typed (unless AutoComplete feature for Web addresses is turned off). However, Internet Explorer doesn't allow you to view and edit the entire URL list that it stores inside the history file. This utility reads all information from the history file on your computer, and displays the list of all URLs that you have visited in the last few days. It also allows you to select one or more URL addresses, and then remove them from the history file or save them into text, HTML or XML file. In addition, you are allowed to view the visited URL list of other user profiles on your computer, and even access the visited URL list on a remote computer, as long as you have permission to access the history folder.

FavoritesView v1.00 FavoritesView displays the list of all your Favorties (of Internet Explorer browser) and bookmarks (of Netscape/Mozilla browsers) in a single page. Each line in the list specifies the title of the item, the URL address, the created/modified date of the bookmark item, and the folder name. You select one or more of these bookmarks, and then copy them to the clipboard, delete them (Only for Internet Explorer Favorites), export them to tab-delimited text file, HTML file, or XML file. FavoritesView also allows you to locate duplicate URL addresses in your Favorites/Bookmarks or find specific item by specifying the URL or the title.
